A. Peter Catinella, M.D., M.P.H.

How to prevent and manage diabetes

A. Peter Catinella, M.D., M.P.H., is our new Department Chair of Family Medicine – Transmountain. He has over 25 years of experience in several major academic institutions, including the University of Arizona College of Medicine, the University of Utah Health, and Indiana University.

Dr. Catinella has also held a number of major executive leadership roles, including positions as Department Vice Chair and Chief Medical Information Officer. Dr. Catinella received his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and his Master’s in Public Health from the University of South Florida. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, and is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

William Weiss, M.D., M.Sc., FRCSC

Sports Medicine and staying safe on the field

William Weiss, M.D., M.Sc., FRCSC, is an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso. Dr. Weiss specializes in the treatment of orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries. Dr. Weiss has authored chapters in both nationally and internationally published orthopaedic textbooks. He is member of numerous orthopaedic, sports medicine, cartilage repair, and foot & ankle associations, and serves as a committee member for both the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. He also serves as an editor and reviewer for prominent orthopaedic, sports medicine, and foot & ankle journals, and has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Dr. Weiss completed fellowship training in sports medicine at Plano Orthopaedics and Sports medicine & arthroscopy at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and foot and ankle surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He attended medical school at Queens University School of Medicine in Canada, and completed residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Weiss is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and is certified in orthopaedic surgery.

Justin M. Wright, M.D.

Sports Medicine and staying safe on the field

Justin M. Wright, M.D. is a Family and Community Medicine physician at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso who specializes in sports medicine, concussion management and musculoskeletal examination. Dr. Wright is the director of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso’s (TTUHSC El Paso) sports medicine fellowship program, which works with athletes at The University of Texas at El Paso and local high school sports teams and serves at on-site athletic events like the El Paso Marathon. Dr. Wright received his M.D. from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas, and later completed a family medicine residency and sports medicine fellowship at the Crozer-Keystone Health System in Pennsylvania. He joined TTUHSC El Paso in 2010.

Mahesh Gajendran, M.D., M.P.H.

Colorectal cancer screening

Mahesh Gajendran, M.D., M.P.H., joined Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Transmountain in September 2016. He completed his medical training at Stanley Medical College in Tamil Nadu, India, and later completed residency training at the Univerisity of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). After completing his residency training, he joined the UPMC faculty and spent six years working as an academic hospitalist. He brings extensive experience in medical education, quality improvement
and clinical research.

Naima Khamsi, M.D.

What to expect when you’re expecting

Naima Khamsi, M.D., is a proud native of El Paso, Texas and is the first Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) physician at the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Transmountain location. She received her undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at El Paso, and earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. She later returned to El Paso to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.

Jose Castro-Garcia, M.D.

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy

Dr. Castro-Garcia received his Doctor of Medicine from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi in Mexico. He completed a general surgery residency at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in 2012. Following his residency training, he went on to complete a prestigious plastic surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and continued his training at the Medical City Hospital Craniofacial Center in Dallas, Texas.
